Since the Summer of 1993, the UBC Summer Music Institute has been a place where singers can spend up to two weeks on the beautiful UBC Campus concentrating on their solo singing. Singers have the opportunity to interact with UBC School of Music Faculty, as well as professional Classical Musicians from all over the world. Participants take part in Group Classes, Private Lessons, Coaching with Pianists, Masterclasses, Small Ensembles, and a Final Concert. Singers of all levels of vocal training are invited to join the Voice and Opera Faculty for either one or both of the weeks of the UBC Voice Workshops. It is a wonderful opportunity to work in classes and individually with teachers and professionals to develop better vocal focus, health, technique, and performance abilities.
Although the Vocal Workshop is still part of the UBC Summer Institute, the Vocal Workshop operates on its own under a different schedule and with different dates. This is to help accommodate the more individualized approach to the art of solo singing, and to allow for proper rest and recuperation for young voices. We are a smaller group and we aim to make the Program a more intimate and individual experience for each singer. With that in mind, the dates for the 2014 Summer Workshop are as follows:
Week One: Saturday July 5th – Friday July 11th
Week Two: Sunday July 13th – Saturday July 19th
Many singers take part in both weeks of camp and enjoy this opportunity to be exposed to even more private lessons, coachings and classes. Each week will have the same general outline in terms of schedule and curriculum, but singers will be divided into groups based on age and ability.
Although the UBC Vocal Workshop is primarily a Classically based program, we do encourage a range of musical interests. We teach the Classical technique because it provides students with the healthiest approach to attempt any style of music.
Students are welcome to bring art song, legitimate musical theatre pieces, folk songs, opera arias, and any music they wish to learn how to perform better. We do not encourage people to bring pop music, as our Faculty is so experienced in the Classical style of Music.
